हुजूरपागेचे वसतिगृह हा अक्षरशः स्वतःच्या घरापेक्षाही सुरेख असा अनुभव आहे. १२७ वर्षांपूर्वी स्त्री शिक्षणाला फारसा वाव नव्हता, त्या काळात ग्रामीण भागातील मुलींच्या शिक्षणाची व राहण्याची उत्तम सोय व्हावी म्हणून चालकांनी सुरु केलेले शाळेचे वसतिगृह हे या संस्थेचे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणावे लागेल.
तो काळ स्त्री शिक्षणासाठी अनुकूल नव्हता, अशा काळात रावबहादूर शंकर पांडुरंग पंडित, डॉ. सर रामकृष्ण गोपाल भांडारकर, न्या. महादेव गोविंद रानडे, श्री. वामन आबाजी मोडक, डॉ. र. पु. परांजपे, डॉ. विश्राम रामजी घोले यांसारख्या दिग्गज मंडळीनी शाळेबरोबर मुलींसाठी वसतिगृह सुरु केले.
हुजूरपागेच्या आवारात बाहेरगावच्या विद्यार्थिनींची राहण्याची सोय केली गेली. सुरुवातीला तबेले दुरुस्त करून तात्पुरते वसतिगृह तयार करण्यात आले. वसतिगृहाची प्रत्यक्ष इमारत उभी करण्याचे काम इ.स. १८९६ मध्ये पूर्ण झाले.
संपन्न आयुष्याचा पाया म्हणजे शिक्षण, संस्कार आणि आरोग्य. आयुष्याची इमारत उंचावण्यासाठी हा पाया भक्कम हवा. लहान वयातच आमच्या वसतिगृहात दाखल होणाऱ्या मुलींची उज्वल भविष्याची ही मुहूर्तमेढ रोवण्यासाठी शाळा त्यांचे ज्ञान, शिक्षण संवर्धनाची जबाबदारी घेते आणि वसतिगृह संस्कार व आरोग्याच्या बांधणीचा वाटा उचलते. लहान वयात वळण लावताना अनेकदा पालक प्रेम आणि कर्तव्य याच्या कात्रीत सापडतात, नैसर्गिकपणे प्रेम जिंकते आणि कर्तव्याकडे दुर्लक्ष होते. वसतिगृह मात्र हे काम कर्तव्यकठोर होऊन पार पाडते. शाळा ही माता असतेच पण रेक्टर प्रसंगी आई, वडील, शिक्षक, मैत्रिण या सगळ्या भूमिका बजावते.
शाळेच्या वसतिगृहात भारतीय संस्कृती जपण्यासाठी वर्षातील सर्व सण उत्साहात साजरे केले जातात. शैक्षणिक प्रगतीबरोबरच शारीरिक प्रगतीसाठी समतोल व पौष्टिक आहार, व्यायाम, खेळ, कराटे इ. प्रशिक्षण दिले जाते. सध्याच्या स्पर्धेच्या युगात विद्यार्थिनींच्या सर्वांगीण विकासासाठी स्पोकन इंग्लिश वर्ग, व्याख्याने, छंदवर्ग इ. उपक्रम राबवले जातात. प्रत्यक्ष अनुभवातून व मनोरंजनातून शिक्षण देण्यासाठी विविध ठिकाणी सहली आयोजित केल्या जातात, यामुळे विद्यार्थिनींमध्ये नेतृत्व, सामंजस्य, एकात्मता, निर्णयक्षमता अशा अनेक गुणांचा विकास होतो. शाळेच्या अनेक विद्यार्थिनी महापौर, पी.एस्.आय., पत्रकार, आय.ए.एस., अभिनय, संगीत, साहित्य, शिक्षण अशा विविध क्षेत्रात अग्रेसर आहेत याचा आम्हाला अभिमान आहे.

Huzurpaga hostel is not just a hostel but a home away from home. The school was established in the late nineteenth century. The period was not conducive for the education of girls. Reformists like Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, Dr. Sir Ramkrishna Bhandarkar, Rao - Bahadoor Shankar Pandurang Pandit, Shri. Vaman Abaji Modak recognized the need to educate Indian women and thus Maharashtra Girls Education Society was established. The inflow of girls from all over Maharashtra was increasing gradually and the need was felt to provide safe and comfortable accommodation to girls, especially those coming from outskirts of Pune. With this, Maharashtra Girls’ Education Society trustees took a wise decision to build a hostel in Huzurpaga School premises. Initially the stables were repaired and temporarily used as hostels. The full-fledged hostel was built in 1896. It was a revolutionary decision that especially facilitated the education of girls coming from rural areas. Since then the Huzurpaga hostel has carried the legacy with utmost pride and has turned out to be the only school in Pune having the best hostel facility for girls.
Education, values and health are the building blocks of human life. Knowing this, Maharashtra Girls’ Education Society runs the hostel like a mission and strives to lay a strong foundation for all the girls who are nurtured to emerge as good human beings. Constant efforts are made for their all-round development along with basic needs like providing the best accommodation and dining facilities.
While tending to their wards parents are often torn between love and duty. Naturally, love wins and duty loses. But the hostel manages a perfect balance between these two and endeavors to make the future glorious for the hostelites. While school is a mother for students, the hostel rector successfully combines the roles of mother, father, teacher and friend.
In keeping with the Indian tradition and culture the hostel celebrates various festivals throughout the year. Besides education, the thrust is also given on physical development of the girls. The hostel provides nutritious and balanced diet and training for various sports and exercises and makes sure that the hostel girls are not lagging behind in today’s competitive world. Extra-curricular activities like Spoken English classes, lectures by various experts, study tours and picnics are organized for overall development of the girls staying in the Huzurpaga hostel. All these activities have helped to inculcate qualities like leadership, camaraderie, unity, and decision making. We can state with pride that our girls from Huzurpaga hostel have made their distinct mark in several fields like politics, literature, sports, music, education and business world. We can proudly say… it’s the HUZURPAGA HOSTEL that has been working hard and shall continue to work to shape the lives of the hostelites forever.
